Jack Donehue

Eora based artist

  • My name is Jack Donehue and I make music.

I’m from a small, country town called Wingham but have been in Eora/Sydney for a while now. I was in an alternative rock band for a while, then I had a solo stint under a pseudonym for a while. Now I’m back under my own name, with the best songs I’ve made so far.

My latest tracks focus on the marriage between sampled drums and electric guitar. Sometimes a choir shows up along with a saxophone, violin, and synths. Through the mashing of my varied influences I believe I’ve made songs that are unique, yet familiar.

My live shows are just me with my guitar and my sampler. Everything you listen to is produced in my bedroom; recorded, mixed and mastered by me.

I’ve been making music since I was a kid, starting by recording songs on my dad’s BOSS BR-8 Recorder. I picked up drums and never really put them down. In high school I had a band and we recorded our very serious, very angsty songs after school using a cracked version of Ableton and the cheapest interface I could find on eBay.

When I was 18 I moved to Eora/Sydney to live with my Nana. I started a band with some friends. I couldn’t play drums in my Nana’s house for obvious reasons, so I focused on guitar. I also started singing, despite having never done that before. This was noticeable. I became the vocalist mostly because we couldn’t find one. We did not try very hard. We played heaps of shows and released two albums that are well liked by the people that have heard them.

After that I started a solo project under the pseudonym of Ratfolk and released two albums called Ducks and Deer. They were grungy and mostly featured down-tuned classical guitars.

Now I’m releasing music under my own name. I’m trying to make songs that connect with a lot of different people. I’m still figuring out my voice, literally and creatively, but after a fair few open mics I’ve built a solo show that is engaging and varied.
